My Mosin Nagant 91/30

April 16th, 2008

These fine rifles don’t even need any introduction IMHO.  Another fine product of Mother Russia.  Or as a friend of mine puts it “Is Mosin, is shoot da?”  I call this particular weapon “Ma Bell” as she is my “reach out and touch somebody” rifle :-)

Brief rundown, built in 1943 at the Izhevsk arsenal, and displays typical wartime rough machining.  All serial numbers match, although I believe the magazine floorplate is force matched.  This is my second 91/30.  My first was a 1942 Tula with even rougher machining that had not been overhauled after The Great Patriotic War.  I wish I still had that one too, it was classy and I had a lot of fun with it.  Ma Bell is a keeper though, very accurate and simple.  I love Russian weapons, they are simple and WORK.  (Well except the Nagant revolver but that is a Belgian design, although the Mosin Nagant is half Belgian, Oh well.)

Self-inflicted shotgun blast not life-threatening

Yakima Herald-Republic

A 20-year-old man shot himself in the groin early Sunday while trying to hide a shotgun down his pants, city police said.

Full story here.

Gotta wonder about that one…  takes some skill to shoot yourself in this fashion with BOTH barrels of a double barrel shotgun…  Hopefully bozo the clown here won’t be passing on his flawed genetic material to anyone else.

Illegal Aliens Go Home!

April 15th, 2008

How many people think illegal aliens, oops I’m sorry undocumented immigrants should be left alone? They pay taxes right? Sure if they are working illegally for an employer that keeps that much bookwork. I spent enough time in SoCal to be very familiar with scenes outside of home improvement stores. Illegals standing outside looking for work, some with crude hand lettered signs on battered vehicles advertising the work they did and the “quality” of it. There is a reason the construction trades are regulated. I wouldn’t hire an illegal outside of Home Depot any more readily than I would hire Billy Bob’s Honest Drywall, Painting and Finish Carpintry. Tacky is tacky.

Yet there are soft hearted (and headed?) liberals who get all sad eyed and decry the plight of the illegal alien, trespassing in our country “just trying to make some money”. This is a bit tough for me, because after all poverty is a horrible thing. But when all this illegals swarm across our borders, use our social services and suck up tax dollars so they can underbid and undercut US workers, then it becomes an invasion. If things are so bad in Mexico they must take some responsibility to change things. If they are unchangeable, I say spend a little more money on them and as they are deported, hand them an M-16, an hour of training and 500 rounds to go change things in Mexico with.

It is one thing to have guest workers. It is another to have the abuse of America’s generosity and hospitality that we are seeing now. We must penalize companies that knowingly hire illegal workers, and start deporting all the illegals that are found.

If you wish to enter this country, enter it legally. There was a time when borders were open and all were welcome. Things have changed and immigration must be controlled. Enter the legal way and be welcome. Enter illegally, get deported and forever loose your shot at coming over here.

This pretty much sums things up for me.

Armed Student stops terrorist

April 14th, 2008

This happened in Jerusalem…

© 2008 WorldNetDaily

A gun rights organization in the United States is accusing the media of trying to conceal the fact that a gunman who attacked students at Jerusalem’s Mercaz Harav seminary was stopped by an armed student at the school.

Authorities report that Ytizhak Dadon, 40, was a “private citizen who had a gun license and was able to shoot the gunman with his pistol,” according to a statement released today by the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

In its earlier reporting on the tragedy, WND confirmed, “One terrorist reportedly was shot to death by a student who was armed…”

Yup.  Now imagine if someone at Virginia Tech had been packing.  Guns in the hands of citizens save lives.  Criminals will always have their guns, why deny citizens theirs?

Some thoughts on the carrying of guns.

April 14th, 2008

I carry a gun.  Sometimes I carry concealed, and sometimes I openly carry my sidearm.  Needless to say I have a concealed pistol permit for when I choose to hide my gun.  Open Carry without a permit is legal in the State of Washington, with a couple of small exceptions.

One reader who uses Olyblog expressed some misunderstanding when I stated I hope to never have to kill someone.

I never, ever want to use my weapon to shoot someone else with.  But I would rather have that option than fall victim to a violent crime or be unable to prevent an innocent third party from being killed maimed or raped.

Most folks who carry a sidearm are aware of the awesome responsibility that comes with the carrying of weapons, and are not out looking for trouble or hoping for a fight.  Rather we go out of our way to avoid both.  But when we have no choice, we hope the presence of the weapon is sufficient, but are willing to go all the way and pull the trigger to protect ourselves or someone else.

I would rather live with killing in lawful defense than failing to do so and seeing myself or someone else killed or maimed in a violent attack.

A violent criminal who has expressed intent to kill or commit grave bodily harm has given up their rights.  Your right or someone else’s as an innocent victim supersede any of the criminal.  I never ever wish to be in that situation to have to make those kind of choices.  But if that horrible weight should fall upon my shoulders, then I wish only for the strength to make the correct call.

Guns

I like guns.  They are a cornerstone of American liberty and a carefully protected and cherished right in this state.   I’ll add some meaningful content soon.

Obama and Hillary…

April 13th, 2008

Obama shows his elitist and racist roots by being critical of cultures he doesn’t understand nor care to understand. Slandering people’s national pride, religion and right to bear arms. These are all things we should expect from a liberal like Obama. Look at the garbage he spewed. ”

“You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.”

“And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”"

Yup this man is in touch with the people.

Clinton isn’t much better. A certified gun grabber in her own right, she tries to defend the culture Obama attacked while attempting to look like she supports the 2nd Admendment while she has already supported renewing her husband’s politically disastrous and pointless so called “assault weapons” ban. She is no more in touch with reality than Obama. Sadly with Ron Paul no longer a serious candidate for president, we have lost our best hope for the United States this election cycle.

Vermin are the nasty things nibbling on the edges of polite and proper society. In limited numbers they are acceptable. They clean up dropped crumbs and eat dead things in the woods.  When they get out of control though, we must exercise the appropriate powers to relegate them back to the woodwork and odd corners from which they came.  We trap rats, and vote politicians out of office.  Let’s send these two vermin back to whatever hole they crawled out of.

Olympia

I like Olympia, which is handy since I live here. I’ll add more stuff soon.

Greetings!

April 13th, 2008

Welcome to my blog! I’ll write on any topic dear to my heart. Local Olympia, WA issues, guns, boats, outdoor survival, whatever crosses my mind. Plus I have a few areas that will be updated regularly. Click on the categories above to see what is new.

A big shout out to the folks who invested so much time and effort to build this page for me.  ZX Devlopment, LLC and TYZ Design!  Both are local Olympia firms, and put out some of the finest web design you can find out there.  ZX Development does all the backend work, and TYZ does the graphics and frontend.  Together they are an unbeatable combination.
